REAL INVENTORS
Human beings have
played many games and entertained themselves since prehistory time, so it is
not easy to say when first sport was truly invented. The invention of ancient
sports cannot be related to single individual. Aristocrats and wealth elites
from ancient Greece and Rome are regarded as inventors of sports. Ancient
Greeks were first to introduce sports formally, to the world and advertise them
as competitive events.
The evolution of sports
is a fascinating journey that spans many years, reflecting social changes, culture
and values of humanity. From beginnings in ancient civilization to modern
times, sports have played central role in human society. Let’s explore this
evolution as:
AGES
The history of sports
goes back at least 3000 years. In the beginning, sports were only related to
military training. A competition was held to determine whether individuals were
fit and useful for the service. Team sports were held to prove the capability
to fight in military wars and also work together as a unit or one team,
involving the throwing of spears, stakes, rocks and sparring one-on-one with opponents.
In Middle Ages,
games for poor were cheap like wrestling, running races, playing dice and
others. While many other people played hunting. Men hunted deer with packs of
dog and killed them with arrows. They also hunted wild boar. Even for medieval peasants’
life was not all about hard work. People were allowed to rest on holidays. On
holidays, poor people danced and wrestled and also played a form of football.
Men from two villages played on pitch and competition held on.
Furthermore, people from cow’s blades made
skates and continued ice skating. People also enjoyed sports like bear-baiting
in which bear was tied and dogs were trained to attack on it.
SPORTS IN 16th
AND 17th CENTURY
In 17th
century, traditional games like bowls continued as tennis and shuttlecock.
Wealthy people also played game a pale-maille (Pall Mall in London the name
from area where game was played).
In Tudor times, people learnt to swim using
bundle of bulrushes as floats. The
Tudors also liked wrestling and “casting the bar”, which was like shot-putting
with iron bar. Hunting was also continued in Tudor times, people kept hunting
the deer with arrows and falcons were trained to kill other birds.
SPORTS IN 18th
CENTURY
In 18th
century people continued to play tennis and version of football. In this era,
horse racing became professional sport and cricket took on its modern form. The
first cricket club was created in Hambleden about 1750.
Rich people also liked
fox hunting and bare-knuckle boxing was also popular as some boxers began to
wear leather gloves.
SPORTS IN 19th
CENTURY
During 19th
century, many sports became organized, in 1863 the London Football association
devised the rules of football. The first international match was held in 1872
between Scotland and England. Australian rules of Football were invented in
1858. John Graham Chambers made up list of boxing rules in 1867.
In this era, many
people disapproved the cruel sports like bull-baiting and cockfighting, cockfighting
was banned and soon bull-baiting was banned in 1835. Many new sports were
invented like Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith and Softball in
1887 by George Hancock. Volleyball was invented by William morgan in 1895. The
American football association was formed in 1920.
People have skated on
ice for many years but first artificial water-biased ice rink opened in 1876.
The international ice hockey association was formed in 1908. Polo is ancient
game, British learnt how to play polo from India and bought it back to Britain.
The first polo club in Britain was founded in 1872. The first World Weightlifting
champions were held in 1891. The beginning of modern sports such as cricket,
tennis, golf, boxing, started during this era with rising trend of establishing
sporting clubs. Many major sports finally started appearing, enabling the
creation of outdoor playing games which includes golf, tennis, cricket, boxing
in England and baseball, basketball, volleyball in United States.
SPORTS IN 20th
CENTURY
The 20th
century witnessed the growth in sports, in term of participation as well as
commercialization. Advancements in technology, transportation, mass media made
sports more accessible to audience. Sports also has become a source of
entertainment, attracting huge crowds. Additionally, new sports were invented
as skateboarding and snowboarding, evolving new taste and interest.
In conclusion, the
evolution of sports reflects story of human civilization. From ancient survival
activities to modern era, sports continue to shape societies and serve as
powerful force in bringing people together.
