Football is an outdoor game that millions of people around the world play and love. It can also be called universal game as every nation introduces it and plays it.  Moreover, it’s a team game that teaches people the importance of sportsmanship, unity and leadership.

FORMS OF FOOTBALL

Football is team sports that involve the kicking a ball to score the goal. The word football means the forms of football that is popular where word is used. It commonly called association football, soccer (in North America, Australia) gridiron football (American football, Canadian football), rugby union and many others. These several forms of football share to varying degrees, having common origin known as football codes.

The game is named as football because it is played by using the feet to pass the ball to others, and the use of hands is not allowed and considered as foul.

CODES OF FOOTBALL

There are number of references to ancient and traditional ball games played in various parts of the world. Contemporary codes of football can be traced back to codification of games at English schools in 19th century. The cultural influence of British empire allowed the rules of football to spread across the areas of British influence. At the late of 19th century, various regional codes were developing: Gaelic football, such as, incorporated the rules of local traditional football games to maintain the heritage. The football league was founded in England in 1888, becoming the first of many football associations. During 20th century, various forms of football arose and grew to become some of most popular team sports in the world.

LAWS OF GAME

Laws of the game are codified rules of association football (form of football). The laws mention the number of players in a team, the game length, size of field and ball, nature of fouls that referees may penalize, the offside law and other laws that define and involves in sport. During a match, it is a responsibility of referee to interpret and enforce the laws of game.

There are several attempts to codify the rules among different forms of football, during mind of 19th century. The extant laws date back to 1863 where ruleset was adopted by newly developed football Association (FA) and written by Ebenezer Cobb Morley. In 1886, these laws have been maintained by International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The laws are a just rule of football association (FIFA) permits its member to use. In United States, Major League Soccer used rules in 1990s and National Federation of State High School Associations and National Collegiate Athletic Association still use ruleset different from the IFAB laws.

GAMEPLAY

Football association is played in accordance to rules known as Laws of Game. The game is played using spherical ball of 27-28 inches circumference, known as football or soccer ball. Two teams of 11 players compete to get ball into others team goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of game will be the winner, if both teams scored equal number of goal it will be draw. Each team is led by a captain who has responsibility mandated by laws of game: to represent the team in toss before kick-off or penalty tricks.

The primary and basic law is that players other than goalkeepers may not handle thew balls with their hands and arms during the play, however, they can use their hands during throw-in restart. On the other hand, players use the feet to move ball around, they may use any other part of the body other than hands (heading with forehead). With normal gameplay, all players are free to ball in any direction and move throughout the pitch. However, they may not pass ball to teammates who are in offside position.

During gameplay, players attempt to develop goal-scoring opportunities through individual control of ball like, by dribbling, passing the ball to other teammates, and by taking shots at the goal, that is guarded by opposite’s team goalkeeper. Opposite players may attempt to regain the control of ball intercepting the pass or through tackling the opponent, although, physical contact is inhibited. It is generally a free-flowing game, with play stopping only when ball has left the field of play or when stopped by referee for infringement of rules.

Football is important game from a point of view of spectator as well as player. Both players and spectators are highly enthusiastic during game. Moreover, it keeps the player mentally and physically healthy and disciplined. And 90minute game tests the sportsmanship, patience, skills and tolerance of players.
