Cricket an outdoor game, has always been a gentle man’s game, which is firstly played in 16th century. It has its origin in south east England.

GAMEPLAY

It is one of most prevalent sports in world that requires the use of ball and bat. It is played between two competing side (teams) of 11 players on the field or ground at center of which there is a pitch of 22 yards with wicket at each end, each containing two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores the runs by striking the ball that is bowled at wickets, with ball and then running between two wickets. On the other hand, bowling and fielding side tries to prevent the runs (by preventing ball from leaving the ground or field) and dismiss each batter. Meaning of dismissal include being bowled, when ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails balancing on the stumps. It also includes catching the ball after it is hit by bat but before it hits the ground or hitting wicket with ball before batter cross the crease in front of wickets. When ten batters have been dismissed or out, the innings ends and team swap roles. The whole game is adjusted by two umpires, aided by third umpire and referee in international matches. They communicate with 2 off-field scorers who record the match information.

PLAYING AREA

Cricket is a bat and ball game played on cricket field between two competing sides of 11 players. The field is circular or oval in shape and edge of playing field is marked by boundary, which may be fence, parts of stands, a rope, painted line or mixture of all these; the boundary must be marked along its entire length.

PITCH

In the center of playing field of ground there is a rectangular pitch on which wooden target called as wicket is settled at its both ends. The wickets are placed 22-yards or 20 meters apart. The pitch is flat, 10 feet wide, with very short grass that tends to be worn away as game proceed 9cricket can also be played on artificial grass). Each wicket is made up of three stumps topped by bails balancing over them.

Pitch is marked at both end with painted lines: popping crease, bowling crease and two return creases. The three stumps are aligned centrally on bowling crease, that is eight feet and eight inches long. The popping crease is drawn in front of bowling crease and parallel to it, although it is drawn as 12-foot line which is unlimited length. The return creases are drawn at right angles to popping crease so they can intersect the ends of bowling crease; each return crease is drawn as eight-foot line, so that it extends 4-feet behind bowling crease.

MATCH STRUCTURE AND CLOSURE

Before the beginning of match, team captains of both teams toss a coin to decide with team will bat first and take first innings. Innings word used for each phase of play in match. In each innings, one team bats, attempting to score more runs while other team bowls and fields the ball attempting to restrict scoring and trying to dismiss or out the batters. When first innings ends, both teams swap the roles; there can be two to four innings, in such case match is played over three to five days while match of two innings is completed in single day.

During innings, all 11 players of team take their positions in field, but only two players of batting team are on field. The exception to this, if batter has any type of injury or illness then a batter is allowed a runner who can run between wickets in place of batter. The order of player is announced before the match, but it can be varied. The innings terminate if all the batters are out, a term defined by laws.

An innings may end early while there are still two not-out batters:

·       The batting team’s captain may declare the innings closed even some of players have not had a turn to bat: this is a decision by captain; because he believes his team has scored enough runs to win.

·       The set number of overs has been bowled.

·       The match has ended permanently due to bad weather or heavy rain or running out of time.

·       In final innings, the batting side has achieved its target and won the match.

OVERS

The laws stated that, throughout the match, the ball shall be bowled from each side alternately in over of six balls. The name overcame about because umpire calls Over! When six balls have been bowled. At this time, another bowler is deployed at other end and fielding side changes the end while batters don’t. a bowler cannot bowl the 2 successive overs; however, a bowler can bowl alternate overs, from same end. The umpires also change their positions so that the one who was at square leg now stands behind the wicket at non-striker’s end.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

The wicket-keeper (fielder behind the batter or wicket) and batters wear protective gear because of hardness of the ball that is delivered with the speed of more than 145 km per hour (90 mph). protective clothing includes a pad (specially designed to prevent the shins and knees), batting gloves or wicket keeper gloves for both hands, safety helmet for head and a box for male players inside the trousers.

Some players wear additional pads inside their shirts and trousers such as arm pads, thigh pads, rib protectors and shoulder pads.

CONCLUSION

At the end, cricket is a dynamic sport that involves skill and strategy. Its global appeal and impact of technology have ensured its place among great sports. It has become a great source of thrill, joy and refreshment for millions worldwide. As it continues to evolve, cricket’s allure only seems to grow, just like unending boundaries it so often witnesses.
