Carrom
is a game that people have enjoyed for many years. It is a game that has long
been played throughout the world during last century. It is commonly played by
families including children.
ORIGIN
Carrom
is an indoor game of Indian origin in which players flick discs, attempting to
knock them to corners of board. This game is originated from India and south
east Asia where it is known by numerous names in different languages. Different
rules exit in different regions.
SPREADNESS
OF GAME
It became popular in United Kingdom during 20th
century. One carrom board with its surface made up of glass is still available
in Patiala, India. It became popular among masses after World War 1. During early century, several competitions
were being held in different states of India. In Sri Lanka, Carrom tournaments may
have begun in 1935. The international
carrom federation (ICF) was created in 1988 in Chennai, India. The formal rules
for Indian version of this game were formed in 1988. In same year, the ICF
officially codified the rules. The game has been popular throughout south Asia,
mainly in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives. It gained
popularity in Europe, north America, Australia, where it is introduced by
Indian diaspora. The UKCF was developed in London in 1991. The main purpose of
this organization is to promote the game of carrom throughout the UK and ensure
the participation of UK players in all major international championships. UKCF
organized national championships and league tournaments throughout UK on annual
basis. In no time it became popular in the rest of world during 20th
century.
RULES
In
order to understand how to play this game, it is essential to understand the
rules of game thoroughly. The rules are divided into 4 categories.

BASIC
RULES OF CARROM
Carrom
is played between 2 or 4 players. There are 19 tokens at play 8 black, 8 white
tokens and one queen. There are some general rules for carrom:
· Players
can pocket only their chosen color taken. If player pockets an opponent’s
carrom men, they require to return it to center of the board.
· For
every carrommen pocketed, the player achieves an extra turn.
· If
player commits a foul, they either lose their turn or have to return one
carrommen as a penalty.
· If
a player pockets the carrom striker, it is considered as foul.
· The
player commits a foul if they touch any piece in carrom board other than
striker.
· It
is a foul if striker or any other carrommen exits the board.
· The
player can place the penalty carrom men on top of other men within the circle.
· If
carrommen overlap with another carrom men or land on edge, leave them as it is
until moved again in normal course of day.
· If
striker rests under another carrommen, delete the sticker with as little
disturbance to covering carrommen as possible.
CARROM
RULES FOR QUEEN
There
are some carrom rules to cover the queen:
· To
cover the queen, the player has to pocket one or more carrom men of their own
color after pocketing the queen.
· If
player covers the queen exactly, the player gets another chance to strike.
· A
player can only pocket and cover the queen if they have picked at least one
carrommen. If player pockets the queen first before pocketing the carrom men,
the queen returns to the center of the board.
· For
the shooting for the queen, if player sinks ne of their carrom men in the same
shot, the queen is automatically covered.
CARROM
RULES TO START THE GAME
There
are rules to start the game:
· The
player who goes first gets three attempts to break the central group.
· The
break of carrommen occur when striker touches any carrommen placed in center of
board.
· They
lose their turn if player attempts to break with improper stroke or pockets his
striker without touching carrommen.
· If
player cannot break after three attempts, the turn is passed to opponent.
CARROM
POINT RULES
To
earn the points in game, take a look at carrom rules:
· The
game consists of 25 points.
· The
value of each carrommen is 1 point, except the queen.
· The
board winner collects 1 point for each opponent’s token left at finish.
· The
player earns 3 points for successfully pocketing and covering the queen. If
board winner cannot cover the queen, no one gets 3 points for queen. You don’t
get queen points after player’s score reaches 22.
Carrom
is either played singles or doubles in women’s and men’s category. Unlike other
indoor games, there are no mixed double teams. Participants from different
countries form teams for tournaments or championships held across the world.
The
game end when player has pocketed all carroms and red queen or when you reach
the time limit. A great hand-eye coordination is required to play this game. It
also requires practice and determination. This is a popular game that forms
bond with people of all the ages. This game also Enaches the skills such as
counting and visual perception in children.
