Gender Inequality in Professional Sports
One of most
controversial topics that sports face is gender inequality. There is not only
inequality in opportunity but also with pay. It occurs mostly in professional
sports, where in almost all cases, men earn more money than women.
Gender inequality on
professional sports have been persistent and long-standing problem. For
decades, female soccer players have been subjected to inferior treatment as
compared to male players, including low pay and limited public support and
interest.
Gender Inequality
It is social phenomenon
in which people are not treated equally on the basis of gender. This can be
caused by sexism also known as gender discrimination. The solution may arise
from distinctions regarding biology, psychology, or cultural forms prevalent in
society. Gender inequality weakens women and girls in various areas such as
health, business life and education. This inequality is experienced differently
across different cultures and affects many people.
Male athletes in golf,
soccer, basketball and tennis make 15 to 100% more than female athletes. There
are many reasons of this inequality. The most popular argument about inequality
is that women’s sports don’t nearly bring in revenue that men’s sports do.
In catching up with
professional boxer, Sarah Thomas, she was able to explain some concepts that
may lead to unfair pay gap in sports. She was asked to describe her opinion on
gender pay gap. She replied, “one of bigger arguments I have heard regarding women
in sports making less money is that fewer people watch women’s sport, so women
are paid proportionately on demand. She was also asked about where in sports
she ahs seen progress. She said, mixed martial art is a combat sport that has
successfully closed pay gap. I believed boxing organization should take notes
from UFC. Many main events are female fighters and some of sport’s biggest star
are women and girls.
SEX DIFFERENCES
Biology
Natural differences
exit between sexes, based on biology and anatomic factors. These biological
differences include hormonal and chromosomal differences. There is natural
difference in relative physical strengths of both sexes. Men, on average, are taller
while women, on average, live significantly longer than men. Men have large
lung volumes and more circulating blood cells (RBCs) and various clotting
factors such as platelets, thrombin protein and fibrinogen, while women have
strong defense system having more white blood cells (WBCs) and produce
antibodies faster.
Psychology
Parental hormone
exposure influences the extent to which person exhibits masculine or feminine
traits. Women are less likely to take risks than men. Men are more likely than
women to be aggressive under the effect of androgen hormone. From birth, male
and female are socialized differently and experienced different environment and
people throughout their lives. Due to social influence, gender often impacts
many characteristics in life; such as personality. Throughout life, men and
women are seen different species who have their own and different personalities
and should stay on different paths.
Conclusion
The conclusion
emphasizes the importance of access to equal and safe playing field, free from
any discrimination or violence and any kind of inequality.
